I finally saw the movie “Tusk“, written and directed by Kevin Smith. I was waiting a long time to watch this movie and when I finally did, I’m glad I did…but there are some words to be said.
This movie was pretty fucked up to say the least. In theory I loved the concept, but it was executed rather poorly. It seemed as though the first half of the movie was a completely different film from the second half. Once Johnny Depp’s character came into play, it turned into something of a French western. It threw me off a bit, but I will say my attention was never lost, except when Michael Parks’ character, Howard Howe dozed us into one of his creepy elongated spiels.
There were parts of this film which I loved and others that I didn’t necessarily care for. For example, I enjoyed the suspenseful music that went along with Justin Long’s character, Wallace Bryton’s journey on the road trying to find Howard. I didn’t particularly care for Johnny Depp’s dopey character. There was something off about that character, clearly. And at times he lost my interest. I did really enjoyed the sadistic Howard Howe. A character well executed by Michael Parks. He was one creepy mother fucker who was driven by obsession.
Something I really want to talk about is how unlikeable Wallace Bryton is. He’s crude and crass and a completely unlikable guy, yet I think it works having him as a protagonist because Howard Howe is so much more unlikeable that we start to feel for Wallace. We feel bad he’s in that situation. We feel bad he’s at the hands of a psycho. Some people might say he got what he deserved, but truly, who actually deserves to be turned into a walrus?
Let’s talk about the walrus suit…umm…could they have made a suit that looked better or more realistic? It was a little too fake horror for me. That part of the movie looked like a B horror film. Don’t get me wrong, I love B horror films, but this was supposed to be A I think.
Overall, I enjoyed experiencing the movie. It wasn’t the greatest, but it wasn’t the worst either. I give it a 3/5.

Would I recommend this movie to people? Yes, because who doesn’t want to see Justin Long be turned into a walrus? Ar Ar (walrus sounds). It’s an experience.
Just a note: I know in a typical movie review, people explain what the movie is about. I don’t feel the need to do that. The trailer suffices.
