Warning: This contains **Spoilers**
I feel like the show This Is Us is on its second season, but that’s only because I’ve been seeing commercials for this show for the longest time. They were literally everywhere, so I figured this show already aired, but it actually only premiered last night, September 20th.
The show is based on different people born on the same day with the same birthday — 36. Right off the bat we get an inside look at their struggles, or rather we know what each character wants: Kate (Chrissy Metz) to lose weight, Kevin (Justin Hartley) an actor trying to find meaning and purpose, and Randall (Sterling K. Brown) trying to find his biological father after he left him at a fire station 36 years prior. At the very beginning we see Rebecca (Mandy Moore) pregnant with triplets and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) as her husband. She then goes into labor and gives birth to her babies, except one dies, leaving them with only 2. Then as Jack sees his babies for the first time a firefighter appears next to him and tells him a baby was left at the fire station. Then everything clicks. (Spoilers) The show had a refreshing plot twist…it turns out that Jack and Rebecca are parents to these three kids who are now grown and 36. (They got to keep Randall, obviously).
The show had a pretty interesting dynamic, but was sappier than sap itself from beginning to end. It kind of reminded me of the show Parenthood. I’m not sure what all to expect this season on This Is Us, but I’m willing to stick around and see, no matter how many cheesy, sappy moments we get.
This show was created by Dan Fogelman, who also created shows like Pitch, which premieres September 22nd on Fox. Dan also wrote movies like Las Vegas, The Guilt Trip, Crazy Stupid Love, Tangled, Cars, etc.
This show is on NBC Tuesdays at 10/9c.
